What type of damage can Macon opossums cause in an attic or under a house?

Macon opossums often find shelter in the attics or the crawl spaces under homes. This can lead to a multitude of diseases that is spread to the occupants of the home. In order to prevent this from happening you need to ensure that these critters have no place to enter. Once they have entered your home it is difficult to get rid of them.

Signs of infestation
1. Fecal matter. Opossums will relieve themselves in the vicinity of the nest that they have built. Their feces is large and often confused with that of a dog.
2. Broken air ducts. They are quite strong and will be able to tear the ducts with their claws and teeth.
3. Disappearing pet food. Opossums are attracted by the presence of food. If you find your pet’s food is disappearing be on the lookout for the culprit.
4. Sound. Georgia opossums are very vocal animals. You will be able to hear them if they are inside your home.
5. Odor. Opossums smell really bad. They leave fecal matter and urine everywhere. The smell will be very noticeable.

The damage that is caused
A lot of the damage that is caused by these creatures is through feces and urine. While the feces is still wet, it will soak into your floorboards. The smell alone will mean that you will have to remove and replace it after you have evacuated the animals. The feces can also make you sick. It is important to clean the area properly in order to prevent this from happening.

A large portion of the damage is caused when the Macon opossum is building its nest. It will use whatever is at its disposal. As attics are often used to store documents and clothes, these are the things that they will use to build with. These will have to be discarded later as they will make you sick and cannot be used again.

They are very good climbers and will gain entry to your attic by climbing up the house. This could lead to broken facia boards, vents and pipes. If they have nested under your home, they will also chew through pipes and ducts. This will need to be replaced, at great cost.

They can also damage insulation and electrical wires in their attempt to nest. Apart from the financial implications, this can also cause appliances to short out and can even cause a fire. This will lead to massive damage.
