Macon Wildlife Education: What If You Are Bitten By A Stray Cat?
If you are bitten by a stray cat, you will need to take different steps than you would if you were bitten by a pet cat. The fact that you don’t this cat’s medical history or whether it is carrying any diseases can make a significant difference. Some of the steps, such as cleaning the wound, will be the same whether you are bitten by a stray or pet cat, but there are also some crucial additional steps.
Clean Your Wound
As with any wound, you want to begin by cleaning the bite mark from the stray cat and then wrapping it up. If you are actively bleeding, stop it by applying firm pressure. Clean the area using soap and water or some other antibiotic product. Then, you can place a sterile bandage on the wound. Do your best to keep the bite elevated above your heart as this reduces swelling and prevents infection.
Visit The Doctor
Cat bites typically require medical attention just because they have a higher risk of infection. You also need to visit the doctor after being bitten by any animal that is wild since you don’t know its vaccination status. There is always a risk that a stray cat will have or be carrying rabies and your doctor can provide treatment so you don’t contract this disease.
Your doctor will clean the wound again, doing so carefully and removing damaged tissue if there is any. He will also use stitches if necessary, although doctors prefer to keep cat bite wounds open since this reduces the risk of infection. Depending on where the bite is and how severe it is, he will check for potential bone, tendon, or nerve damage and any signs of infection. Depending on when your last tetanus shot was, your doctor may give you one. You may also be prescribed an antibiotic.
It is possible that your doctor will suggest you get a rabies shot although the risk of cats in the United States having rabies is fairly small. You should ideally call your local animal control center after being bitten by a stray cat so they can find it and test it for rabies.
Watch For Infection
After visiting the doctor, you will need to watch out for signs of infection for at least a few days. If you notice warmth, increased tenderness, swelling, redness, or pus oozing from the wound or develop a fever, visit your doctor as you may have an infection.
